The Sperrin Choir

Sperrin Choir Goes Stateside!

Following a very enjoyable and successful Christmas Program featuring Michael Card's 'The Promise' we are now getting into rehearsal for our Spring concert. The Sperrin Choir present an all American programme of music greats, including George Gershwin, Dolly Parton Neil Diamond and the Beach Boys. The programme is sure to have you bopping along to favourites like Sweet Caroline and I Get Around, while the choir will slow the tempo in lyrical arrangements like That's What Friends Are For. We will be delighted to once again welcome our Youth Choir and Sperrin Kidz who are sure to add to the American spirit! With only one night planned for the Burnavon, make sure to get your tickets booked early!

The Sperrin Choir is a 55 person, cross-community choir based in Mid Ulster in Northern Ireland.

We meet weekly from January to May and from September to December to practise for concert performances. We have sung at venues across Northern Ireland and the Republic, as well as in England and France. We have a long-standing Twinning relationship, through the former Cookstown District Council, with the Plena Voce Chorale in Plerin-Sur-Mer/St. Brieuc in Brittany, Northern France. We have welcomed them to Northern Ireland on several occasions and they will visit us again this Spring. We have also welcomed Inverclyde Voices from Scotland and Swift Singers from Essex, to whom we paid a return visit.

We welcome singers of all ages from 16 to whatever..

A Christms Gift!

Dashing Thru' the Snow!

Two great concerts at Burnavon Theatre

Once again, we had a super couple of nights with our Christmas programme.

On Thursday 14th December we had the talented Tamlaghtmore Silver Band as special guests, and were treated to some wonderful carols with full silver oomph! Our thanks to them once again!

Friday night, a Full House, with Sperrin Youth and Sperrin Kidz adding real magic to the show.

The Twelve Days of Christmas were unravelled unceremoniously by the Men, while the Ladies delivered a beautifully atmospheric Winter Song.

Our thanks again to the Burnavon staff, both front of house and Denvir and Roy at the controls.

The Sperrin Choir has...

......its base in Christ Church, Castledawson. The choir has members from numerous surrounding towns, especially Cookstown, but also from Draperstown, Dungiven and Coleraine.

Sperrin Choir have been giving a number of concerts every year in different locations including the Burnavon in Cookstown, as well as concerts in Limerick, Sligo, Roscommon, Essex and Brittany (as part of the Town Twinning Scheme).

The range of music performed is extensive, as our librarian will attest! Extracts from all the major Broadway shows, compilations (eg James Bond themes, greatest hits of particular artists), folk music from around the world, pop and jazz, negro spirituals and special Christmas music, both sacred and light-hearted. Our Musical Director, Sam Cuddy, is well-versed in sourcing music and compiling programmes which delight local audiences.

But what really sets this choir apart is camaraderie and enjoyment. Sam conducts weekly practices in a light-hearted atmosphere with plenty of banter. Alongside Sam, as conductor/arranger, the choir is most fortunate to have the continued dedication of Gail Evans as accompanist, despite her work with the Belfast Philharmonic and numerous other commitments. Gail, like many other members, retains a great loyalty and allegiance to the choir, where she first took on the role of accompanist as a 'youngster'. She is now also very committed to the Sperrin Kidz and Sperrin Youth Choirs, which are fortunate to also have Caroline Jones as Musical Director. The future of the Choir is in good hands!

We normally have two concert seasons, Christmas and Spring. We rehearse each Thursday from 8pm until 10pm at Christ Church Hall in Castledawson. As well as the pleasure of the company of visting choirs from time to time and performances with them, you could even find yourself travelling for weekend stays here and there, perhaps even abroad!
